Martin Implement

Mike Meadows, Service Technician

Mike got his start with Martin Implement in 1995, upon graduating from Universal Technical Institute. As a certified technician, he’s received extensive training from our manufacturers, which allows him to work on any type of equipment we sell. Mike will often be found out in the field, undertaking some of the most demanding repairs that come our way. As part of our 24/7 emergency crew, he’s always prepared – come rain, snow or shine!

What do you enjoy the most about Martin Implement?
The work environment and friendly atmosphere.

What’s been your most challenging assignment?
Changing the frame on a Kubota utility vehicle damaged after striking a tree. It resulted in a complete disassembly of the unit with hundreds of parts involved. It was similar to building the unit from scratch.

Best customer advice:
Fix your equipment early, so repairs don’t turn into major projects. Pay close attention to manufacturer recommended maintenance intervals and keep tabs on wear components, such as loader frames and buckets

Jerry McIntosh, Parts Assistant

Jerry came aboard with Martin Implement at our South Elgin branch in 2010, following five years working for the Payline West dealership. His easy going personality resonates with customers, who not only appreciate his resourcefulness but also enjoy the friendly manner in which they’re treated.

What do you enjoy the most about Martin Implement?
The challenge; you never know what the next phone call or customer at the counter will bring.

What new piece of equipment have you recently had to source
parts for?

This may not be so unique, but I do like working with our Hyundai line. The parts are easy to look up and you can check availability and order right from the site.

What product would you recommend that most customers aren’t
aware of?

Poly edges for snow plows. The poly edges we carry are a universal fit. They’ll work on almost any snow plow in the market.

Cathy Lewis, Rental Coordinator

If you’ve had the pleasure of working with Cathy in our Orland Park rental department, then you know how her even temperament and can-do attitude translate into a truly satisfying customer experience. With a background in logistics, Cathy was able to translate that skill to our rental operations when she joined the Martin team in 2008. Her personable approach ensures that our customers receive the attention that they deserve and provides a compelling reason for them to return again and again.

What do you enjoy the most about Martin Implement?
MI has an amazing group of people that have worked here for many years with a wealth of knowledge and a helping hand, who work very well together.

What’s been the most unique job application that you’ve rented equipment for?
The FINN bark blower was used to blow material for a rooftop garden application. I think it was for one of Sam Langham’s customers, and it’s becoming more popular now.

What piece of equipment are customers surprised that we rent?
More customers are finding out about our specialized equipment; mostly the FINN hydroseeders, straw blowers & bark blowers, plus the Screen Machine units. They are very pleased to be able to test run these products in our yard to become familiar with the equipment and be confident it will do the job for them.

What’s your favorite weekend activity that helps you unwind? We are dedicated boaters. Weather permitting, we are out Saturdays and Sundays! The beach front area we go to is so calm, it’s like you’re on vacation.

Brian Vaughan, Service Technician

Befitting an earlier career as a carpenter, Brian has a passion for constructing things. That’s why when Brian joined Martin Implement’s South Elgin branch in 2009, he had already mastered the challenges of an equipment service technician due in large part to his analytic mind and nine years turning wrenches at the Payline West dealership. With his experience and know-how, Brian’s able to work on anything that comes through the doors of our shop. In a profession being rapidly shaped by technology, Brian continually remains ahead of the curve and is an admirable mentor to our newest team members.

What do you enjoy the most about Martin Implement?
Well I’m a guy who likes to work with my hands and I enjoy the challenge of figuring out a problem. If I'm not learning something new, repairing something or building something I'm not happy. So even though some days are trying at work, I like the satisfaction of making a good repair or coming up with a way to make a repair faster. Sometimes I even have to fabricate something to work that you can't get parts for anymore. Plus the guys I work with make it all the better.

What’s been your most challenging assignment?
Recently I had an excavator, which had a hydraulic catastrophe that put metal throughout the system. That repair took a while to find and remove all the metal pieces from the hydraulic system.

Best customer advice:
It might be corny, but read your owner’s manual! Follow the service intervals and GREASE, GREASE, GREASE. That should save you a ton of money.

What activity do you look forward to in your spare time?
I built a CNC Router from scratch and learned a lot about machining and programming. I support that hobby by selling some things I make using it. You can see some things I sell at www.bltventure.etsy.com

Andy Gustafson,
Driver/Shop Assistant

Chances are you’ve seen Andy behind the wheel of our delivery truck since he’s been traversing the roads for us since 1994. In addition to knowing our service area like the back of his hand, Andy’s maintained an exemplary safety record, ensuring that equipment is not only delivered in a timely fashion but also without incident. When he’s not making deliveries, Andy can be found in our service shop performing equipment maintenance, set-up and basic repairs. Because of his focus and versatility, Andy is a significant contributor to our Martin team, and another reason why the company stays pointed in the right direction, so to speak!

What do you enjoy the most about Martin Implement?
Being on the road, meeting customers and seeing what they are building.

Best advice for avoiding traffic congestion?
Listen to the traffic report on the radio and if you get caught in it, just go with the flow.

Favorite vacation destination?
Our annual trip to Eagle River, Wisconsin or any place camping with my family.

What common equipment transport mistakes do you see out on the road?
The biggest mistake is seeing chains that are loose or being held down with rope.

Wayne Stover,
South Elgin Service Manager

Out of all the staff at Martin Implement’s South Elgin facility, no one has been around the (Ford) New Holland equipment line longer than Wayne, which is a testament to his work ethic and ability to please customers. Fresh out of high school, Wayne landed a mechanic’s job at Payline West in 1981 and later progressed into the Service Manager position; a title that he’s held with Martin Implement since joining the team in 2009. While Wayne’s equipment repair knowledge is vast, it’s his ability to relate with people and explain things in understandable terms that customers most appreciate and look forward to whenever a service issue leads them back to the dealership.

What do you enjoy the most about Martin Implement?
Every day is a new challenge when it comes to working on different
equipment and interacting with customers.

What’s been the most unique piece of equipment that you’ve had in
for repair?

A crawler machine for drilling, that hydraulically would unfold for use and
refold on the trailer.

What beneficial service does the department offer that customers
might not be aware of?

People would benefit by taking advantage of our $99 maintenance
inspection to possibly catch a problem ahead of time.

Best Customer Advice:
Keep equipment greased. Keep radiator and oil cooler area cleaned.

What’s your favorite way to unwind outside of work?
Golf, spending time with my girlfriend and getting together with my
neighbors.

Melanie Evans,
Rental Coordinator

If you've ever visited our South Elgin dealership, chances are Melanie is
the first person you encountered. Her infectious demeanor and love of
customers is why you'll find her front and center. A five year tenure as an
Administrative Assistant for New Holland Construction eventually lead
Melanie to our South Elgin location in 2005. She has a certified insurance
license from the State of Illinois and her versatility with contracts and
inventory alike keeps her well prepared to efficiently handle customer
equipment requests. When you work with Melanie you feel like you're
dealing with a lifelong friend, and who wouldn't want that level of attention
when it comes to what's best for your business?

What do you enjoy the most about Martin Implement?
I enjoy the customers and co-workers that I get to work with every day. Also, I get to drive the big machines! Where else can you do that?

What piece of equipment are customers surprised that we rent?
People are probably still surprised to see the FINN hydroseeder and bark blower.

What's been the most unique job application that you've rented equipment for?
I'm not sure that these three are unique, but they are pretty cool. A couple of years ago, I had three separate customers rent from me that were remodeling Lincoln Park Zoo. There was another customer who worked at Wrigley Field last summer. Last, and probably the coolest, one of my customers had a TV show on the Discovery channel and I got to see the equipment they were renting from me.

What was your favorite childhood toy and would your daughter share the same fondness for it?
I had two favorite toys when I was little; a wooden doll highchair that my cousin gave me and a Fisher-Price pull toy phone with googly eyes. I actually kept both of them and my daughter plays with them as well. She gets just as much joy out of them as I did.

If you were able to be in two places at once, where would you choose to be?
Heaven and earth.
