Ask the Experts is a recurring segment where we share expert advice from our professional staff. In our latest Ask the Experts segment, we go over how you determine when you need to replace the rubber tracks on your compact track loader or mini excavator.
Choose from high-quality tire and rubber track sets from our parts department to improve traction and performance on any make or model. Through August, they’re 10% off if you buy the full set.
The idea behind rubber tracks is that they increase traction while minimizing ground impact. The ample surface area means your machine’s weight is more evenly distributed, allowing for greater “flotation,” which provides an advantage with challenging terrain. Also because of the greater weight disbursement, compact track loaders (and smaller utility loaders like the Toro Dingo) are good choices for landscape and construction work at existing homes.
Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) has technical assessments that will assist you in measuring the skills of existing service techs or job applicants. The assessments are tailored to meet the needs of the equipment industry. We use the assessments up front in the hiring process to help us make the right hire.
The questions on the assessment evaluate technicians’ knowledge in subject areas such as diesel engine, power trains, hydraulics/hydrostatics, and more. They were created by a team of technical experts broadly representing, manufacturers, dealers and technical colleges with equipment programs and are aligned with AED National Construction Equipment Technical Standards. AED has created an informational video on their technical assessments program that was filmed at Martin Implement’s dealership. Click here to view.
When you grow up in a farm family with ten siblings, you learn rather quickly how to become highly resourceful. Whether that means putting in sweat equity out in the fields or competing for your fair share at the dinner table. If the farm tractor breaks down, you get a quick course in Mechanics 101. So when Ed Martin first stepped foot into Martin Implement some 40 years ago, a year removed from high school, his learning curve towards becoming a seasoned equipment mechanic was more truncated than most peers his age. We can’t say it enough: skid steers and compact track loaders are some of the most versatile pieces of equipment on a job site. That versatility comes from the heart of these machines — their hydraulic systems. The hydraulic system drives the machine, powers the loader and the many attachment options, gives dynamic braking, lubricates components and cools them. Because a reasonable amount of maintenance cost concentrates on the hydraulic system, proper maintenance and care of a machine’s hydraulic system is crucial for the longevity of it, and for keeping costs and downtime to a minimum. Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a vital component of a Select Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. It’s a clear solution made of Urea and water that’s colorless but has the smell of ammonia. When added to the system, it enters the exhaust stream, where it breaks down Nitrogen Oxide emissions into Nitrogen gas and water vapor – two basic components of the air we breathe. Your machine has a separate DEF tank that varies in size depending on what model you’re running, and it usually has a blue cap for easy identification.
The DEF tank is for DEF, not diesel. The diesel tank is for diesel, not DEF. Continue reading
